Accelerated Training Scholarships

Dance Education Project Scholarship

Begun in 1990 and supported entirely by public and private sector grants, the Dance Exposure Project is an effort to provide a comprehensive dance education program within the Stanford, Norwalk, Bridgeport and Danbury school districts.  Emphasis is placed on serving at-risk youngsters who would not otherwise be able to afford accelerated training in their field of study.

Dance Exposure Project Scholarships provide tuition free dance training to under-privileged youth who have demonstrated talent.  Students are encouraged to participate through annual outreach auditions and satellite classes by Connecticut Ballet instructors in local elementary schools. Artistic Director Brett Raphael and Director of Education Dana Rodriguez nominate individual students for the scholarships after consultation with school administrators.

Accelerated After-School Training Program

Students take part in an intensive training program based on a classical ballet curriculum in   addition to important dance and music styles such as jazz, tap, West African dance and West African percussion. Each family signs a scholarship agreement which includes the provision of one hour of community service per week in support of the organization. Performance opportunities include participation in the end-of-year showcase and special community appearances.  A certificate is issued to each student who successfully completes his or her program.  Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or participating school districts.

The Dance Exposure Project is evaluated annually by staff members and participants. Anecdotal evidence from parents, counselors, program managers, and faculty give the program high marks for building cultural awareness, our emphasis on strong social skills, and developing excellent physical fitness while supporting each student’s academic achievement.

Allocation of Grant Monies & Opportunities for Recognition

Connecticut Ballet actively solicits private donors and foundations interested in underwriting individual scholarships. We allocate 100% of your gift in support of one student’s training for the 2010-2011 school year. Funding may be targeted to a specific recipient or simply awarded on a discretionary basis.  All such contributions are tax-deductible as allowed by law.  A brief profile of the scholarship recipient can be provided to the donor upon request.

Donors are recognized in the Season Program Book and donor listings throughout the year.  Opportunities to meet the sponsored student(s) include the organization’s annual ‘Red Carpet Night’ and end-of-year showcase at the Stamford Center for the Arts.
